Feminessay was born out of the lack of diversity represented in the narratives of Black people, especially Black women, in academic research about literacy. We realized that there were no online spaces specifically dedicated to Black women sharing our own narratives with each other and the rest of the world, interacting with one another about our writing, and adding to the narratives that we see in research and media. We wanted to make a change by claiming and cultivating a space for this to happen.

To my Feminessay community, I know that we are hurting.

There is always so much going on in the world, and today it involves us on the front lines once again. Some of us have jumped right into the fight with protests, donations, and words that show where we stand. Some of us feel helpless, hopeless, and like our fighting for justice is futile. It is not.
.
Our stories and words do so much every time we share. They let other Black people know that they are not alone. They remind us that our words are powerful, inspiring, and meaningful. They make so much of what happens in our lives as Black people VISIBLE for those on the outside looking in. And while we don’t write for them, we know this powerful impact all the same.
.
Feminessay centers the voices of Black women and that will never change. As such a force, Feminessay continues to stand with the Black community in our fight for justice. While the name heard most through the chants and protests is that of #GeorgeFloyd, we are also remembering #BreonnaTaylor, #AhmaudArbery, #TonyMcDade, and the countless others who were senselessly murdered.
.
Let us not forget that we are still in the midst of a global pandemic. Black lives are still being taken for granted. We are angry, hurt, fed up, and exhausted by all that we have to deal with. Given the current social climate and all that is happening in the world right now, we hope that you are all staying safe, healthy, and taking the time that you need to find your peace. May we never forget that Black lives matter and may we continue to share our Black stories. ✊🏾✊🏿✊🏼

I love to read books of essays and memoirs because people’s stories make the world go round. I particularly focus on Black women’s stories because the art of the personal essay is something that we have used to share and teach through connection and separation at the same time. Our stories connect and distinguish us through perspective, honesty, and levels of comfort with speaking our minds. Our personal stories as Black women also separate us from conforming or molding our experiences to comfort every gaze. One piece of advice that Dr. McMillan-Cottom gave me was to ignore those other gazes. If I’m not writing for you, I should not be thinking about how you will receive my thoughts, words, and experiences while I do it. I love @tressiemcphd’s essays because they’re the perfect blend of empirical research and tellin’ it like it is without apology. Nobody can tell a Black woman’s story like a Black woman can tell her own, so whenever I get the chance to encourage us to share, it’s writing like Tressie’s that I recommend. She writes about HER Black body. She shares HER Black experience. And she shares HER OWN thoughts and questions about what it all means in our very imperfect society. What’s more? She supports @feminessay and how we seek to share, uplift, and center Black women and our stories in a space that continues to be intentionally and creatively crafted for us and by us since its creation.
